AI watermarking

AI watermarking embeds invisible signals in AI-generated content — text, images, audio, video — that can later be detected to identify the content as AI-generated. Used by Google (SynthID), OpenAI, Meta, and others.

Definition

AI watermarking embeds invisible signals in AI-generated content — text, images, audio, video — that can later be detected to identify the content as AI-generated. Used by Google (SynthID), OpenAI, Meta, and others.

What it means

For text: subtle bias in token selection (Aaronson's scheme, Google SynthID for text). For images: imperceptible pixel patterns (SynthID for Imagen). For audio + video: embedded spectral signals. Detection requires the watermark key (centralized) — adversaries can attempt to strip via paraphrasing, compression, regeneration, but each round degrades content. C2PA (Content Authenticity Initiative) is the broader standard combining watermarks + cryptographic signatures.

Why it matters

Watermarking is an imperfect but useful piece of the AI-content provenance puzzle. EU AI Act, FCC rules, and platform policies (YouTube, Meta) increasingly require AI-content disclosure — watermarks help enforce. Limits: easily stripped by recompression / paraphrasing, only works on content from cooperating models.

Can I strip watermarks?

Yes for text (paraphrase + retranslate). Harder for images. But each round of stripping degrades quality. Robust watermarking is an active research arms race.

C2PA?

Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity — adds cryptographic provenance signatures to media. More robust than watermarks alone but requires ecosystem adoption.
