Definition

A 'second brain' is a digital system for capturing, organizing, and resurfacing what you read, think, and learn. Tiago Forte's term, popularized in his 2022 book + course.

What it means

The CODE workflow: Capture (highlights, notes, web clips), Organize (PARA: Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives), Distill (progressive summarization), Express (output: writing, slides, decisions). Tools: Obsidian, Notion, Capacities, Tana, Roam, Logseq. The point isn't to capture everything — it's to capture WITH INTENT and resurface relevant material later when you're working on something where it matters.

Why it matters

Knowledge workers process 10-100x more information than they can retain. Without a system, that information is lost. A second brain shifts the question from 'do I remember this?' to 'is it in my system?' — much higher hit rate.

Frequently asked questions

Best tool?

Obsidian (free, local) for solo + privacy-conscious. Notion for collaborative + databases. The system matters more than the tool.

Time investment?

30-60 min/week to curate. The mistake is over-organizing — capture loosely, organize lightly, only deeply structure when working on a specific output.
