What it does

Classic top-and-bottom-text meme generator. Upload any image (or pick from a built-in set of well-known meme templates: Distracted Boyfriend, Drake Hotline Bling, Two Buttons, Change My Mind, Expanding Brain, Sad Pablo Escobar, etc.), type your top and bottom captions, and export a PNG with the iconic white-Impact-with-black- outline meme typography.

Why is meme text always white Impact with a black outline? The font dates back to 2000s image-board culture: Impact (a font that ships with Windows by default) is a heavy condensed sans-serif that reads cleanly at small sizes on noisy backgrounds. The white-on-black outline ensures the text is legible against any image, light or dark. That convention got locked in by 4chan and Reddit captioning tools around 2007-2010 and has been the universal “this is a meme” visual signifier ever since — even when the underlying joke uses different formats.

Output is PNG (preserves transparency on the empty parts if your source has them, and lossless on the visible parts). The whole thing runs in your browser via Canvas 2D — no upload, no watermark. Drop a custom template or use one of the built-ins, type away, ship.

How to use it

 1. Pick a built-in meme template, or click Upload to use your own image.
 2. Type your top text in the top box. Convention: caps, short, punchy. The ALL-CAPS Impact treatment is a meme convention — leave it as is for that look.
 3. Type the bottom text. Two-line memes work best when the bottom line is the punchline / payoff to the top.
 4. Adjust font size if your text doesn't fit. Default size scales with image width; oversized images may need manual tuning.
 5. Click Download. Output is a PNG ready to drop into Slack, Discord, Twitter, Reddit, group chat — anywhere memes go.

When to use this tool

 • Quick reaction memes for chat threads (Slack, Discord, group texts).
 • Social-media posts referencing a current event or running joke.
 • Internal-team humor — meme the team's daily standup blocker, the latest CI flake, the project that won't ship.
 • Onboarding-doc humor — a single meme can soften a long technical document.

When not to use it

 • Modern memes that don't follow the top-and-bottom-text format (image macros, multi-panel comparisons, video memes, screencap reactions). For those use a multi-frame editor or video-meme tool.
 • Memes where the visual joke is in image manipulation (collages, photoshops, AI-generated content). This tool is text-on-image only.
 • Anything with sensitive or copyrighted source material — meme conventions don't override copyright. Use your own images or public-domain templates.
 • Professional / business-formal contexts — even "appropriate" memes can read unprofessionally in client communications.

Common use cases

 • Educational use — demonstrating the underlying concept
 • Onboarding a colleague who needs the same calculation/conversion
 • Verifying a number or output before passing it on
 • Quick generation during a typical workday

Frequently asked questions

Why is the font Impact and not something more modern?
Convention. Impact-with-black-outline is the universally-recognized meme typography since the 2000s — using a different font on a top-and-bottom-text meme will read as “not actually a meme”. If you want a different look, use the meme tool for the structural convention but accept that it'll look like a meme; for non-meme image typography, use a design tool.
Are the built-in templates copyright-cleared?
Most well-known meme templates are subject to fair-use considerations rather than explicit licensing. Templates included here are the canonical public formats that have been used for years across the internet without clear ownership disputes. For commercial use (memes in advertising, paid promotional content), do your own clearance — fair use is fact-specific.
Can I use a custom font?
Not directly in this tool — Impact is the default. For custom typography, save the meme without text and add text in any image editor (Figma, Photopea, even PowerPoint).
Why white text with black outline?
Because it stays readable on every possible background (light areas, dark areas, mixed). White-on-white or black-on-black would disappear; white-with-black-outline is universally legible. It's the same reasoning behind subtitle styles in every video player.
Will the meme have a watermark?
No. Many meme generators add a small watermark at the bottom; this one doesn't. Your meme is the meme. Output is a clean PNG.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Canvas 2D text-overlay runs entirely in your browser. Open DevTools → Network during use and you'll see zero outbound requests.
