What it does
Unscramble jumbled letters back to a real word. The game shows you a permuted version of a common English word (7-11 letters), and you type the original. Get it right and a new word appears; get stuck and you can skip. The tool tracks streak, total solved, and average time per word over the session.
Word scrambles are a classic vocabulary and pattern- recognition exercise. Solving them quickly draws on orthographic memory (recognizing letter-combination patterns familiar from real words), phonological loop (sounding out letter combinations to find pronounceable structures), and vocabulary recall (rapidly searching your mental lexicon for words matching the available letters). The cognitive psychology research calls this "anagram solving" and it's been studied as a measure of fluid intelligence and language fluency.
The tool ships with a curated 24-word dictionary of everyday English nouns and adjectives — long enough that easy 4-letter solutions are out of scope but short enough to remain solvable in 30-60 seconds. Future versions will add difficulty levels (5-letter quick mode, 12+ letter expert mode) and category filters (animals, food, places).

- Look at the scrambled letters. They're a real English word with the letters in random order.
- Type your guess into the input box (case-insensitive).
- Press Enter or click Submit. Correct answers advance to the next word.
- Click Skip if you can't figure it out — the tool reveals the answer and moves on.
- Streak counter resets to 0 on a wrong answer; total-solved counts every correct answer regardless of streaks.
When to use this tool
- Quick brain warm-up at the start of a work session — 5 minutes of word scrambles wake up vocabulary.
- Vocabulary practice for English-language learners.
- Light competitive game with a friend — race to solve the same scrambles.
- Filling 5-10 minutes during a commute or wait.
When not to use it
- When you want to study specific vocabulary (technical terms, foreign-language words) — the dictionary is general English nouns and adjectives only.
- If you find anagrams frustrating rather than fun — some people genuinely hate them, that's normal, pick a different brain game.
Frequently asked questions
- Are the words always English?
- Yes — common English nouns and adjectives, 7-11 letters. The list is small enough to be a quick game; a future version will pull from a larger dictionary and add language options.
- What's a 'good' time per word?
- Fluent English speakers typically solve 7-letter scrambles in 10-30 seconds, 9-letter in 30-60 seconds, 11-letter in 1-3 minutes. Times depend heavily on whether the scrambled letters happen to suggest a familiar word root early. Don't compare to others — track your own improvement over time.
- Why does my brain refuse to see the answer sometimes?
- It's called 'tip-of-the-tongue' or 'lethologica' — the word is in your vocabulary but you can't access it. Stepping away for 30 seconds usually surfaces it. Forcing recall sometimes makes it worse; relaxation usually works better.
- Will it accept variants like plurals or tenses?
- Only if the actual scrambled answer is a plural or specific tense. The dictionary stores one form per word; the answer must match that exact form. So if 'cat' is the answer, 'cats' won't be accepted.
- Can I add my own words?
- Not in this version, but a custom-dictionary mode is on the roadmap — paste your own word list (study vocabulary, names, technical terms) and play scrambles from it.
