Both Claude Code and Aider live in your terminal and auto-edit code. Claude Code is Anthropic's first-party harness with Skills, MCP, hooks. Aider is the open-source CLI that's been refining AI-pair-programming since 2023. Different feels.

Option 1

Claude Code

Anthropic's terminal agent; bundled with Claude Pro/Max.

Best for

Multi-file refactors, agentic coding, anyone with Claude Pro+.

Pros

  • Most capable agentic coder in 2026 (top SWE-bench)
  • Bundled with Claude Pro $20/mo (no extra cost)
  • Skills, hooks, slash commands, MCP integration
  • Best multi-file refactor reliability
  • Tight Anthropic SDK integration

Cons

  • Claude-only (no GPT / Gemini option)
  • Pro plan caps tighter than Max for heavy use
  • Less mature on some open-source workflows than Aider

Option 2

Aider

Open-source CLI AI coder; bring-your-own API key.

Best for

Open-source contributors, multi-model users, anyone wanting full control.

Pros

  • Free + open source (MIT)
  • Multi-model: Claude, GPT-5, DeepSeek, Gemini, Ollama (local)
  • Strong git integration (auto-commits per change)
  • Tested with 70+ programming languages
  • Pay-per-token via your own API key

Cons

  • You pay API costs separately (no bundled Pro plan)
  • Less polished agent UX than Claude Code
  • No built-in skills/MCP equivalents

The verdict

Already Claude Pro/Max user → Claude Code (it's bundled). Multi-model, open-source, or want to pay per-token → Aider. Best of both: many devs use Aider as a free entry, then switch to Claude Code as their main when they hit Pro+ tier on Anthropic.
