This comparison is mostly historical. Adobe XD has been in maintenance mode since 2023 after the Figma acquisition fell through. New users shouldn't pick XD; existing users should plan a migration. Here's what changed and what to do about it.

Option 1

Figma

Industry default in 2026; collaborative-first; the actual choice.

Best for

Anyone starting fresh, anyone migrating off Adobe XD, every design team in 2026.

Pros

  • Industry-standard — every hire expects Figma proficiency
  • Real-time multi-cursor collaboration (still no peer)
  • Browser-based; works on any OS
  • Massive plugin ecosystem
  • Auto Layout + Variables system rivals real CSS
  • Dev Mode exports clean specs
  • Figma Make / AI generates prototypes from descriptions
  • Free Starter tier covers solo + light usage

Cons

  • Files live on Figma's servers (no offline-only mode)
  • Pricing scales by editors ($16-45/seat)
  • Performance on enormous files (>5,000 layers) can degrade

Option 2

Adobe XD

Maintenance mode since 2023; new sales discontinued.

Best for

Nobody, in 2026. Existing teams should migrate.

Pros

  • If you have a perpetual XD license, it still works for your existing files
  • Tight integration with other Adobe Creative Cloud apps (Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Bundled with Creative Cloud subscription if you have one
  • Voice prototyping (the unique XD feature) still works

Cons

  • No new features since 2023
  • No active development; bug fixes only
  • Adobe will eventually sunset entirely
  • Smaller and shrinking community
  • Plugins ecosystem stagnant
  • Hiring market: 'XD experience' is no longer a credential

The verdict

Pick Figma. The actual question is: how to migrate existing XD files. Figma's XD-import tool covers most artwork (Auto Layout doesn't translate, prototype interactions are lossy, plugins lost entirely). Plan: re-design the components in Figma using imported XD as reference, re-create interactions in Figma's Prototype mode. For a typical 50-screen XD project, plan 1-2 weeks of design-time to migrate cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Adobe XD really dead?

Maintenance mode since 2023. Adobe still sells Creative Cloud subscriptions that include XD; new XD-only purchases are gone. There's no public sunset date but no roadmap either.

What about Sketch?

Still alive, still updated. Mac-only, file-based, $10/mo. Real third option if you don't want Figma — but Figma's mindshare advantage is real.

Penpot or other open-source alternatives?

Penpot is the leading open-source Figma alternative — web-based, self-hostable, free. Smaller ecosystem; growing. Worth considering for cost-conscious teams or open-source-aligned shops.
