SmallPDF, ILovePDF, Convertio — they all work, but they upload your PDF to a server and gate the third operation behind a paywall. These twelve tools do the same jobs entirely in your browser via PDF.js + pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device, there's no upload progress bar, and there's no "upgrade to continue". The trade-off: very large PDFs (100+ MB) hit your browser RAM, but for typical 5-50 MB files everything is faster than the upload-based alternatives.

The full list

  1. 01 · Merge PDF

    Merge PDF

Combine multiple PDFs into one in any order. Drag-and-drop the files, drag pages between them, export. The most-used PDF operation; no upload step.

  2. 02 · Split PDF

    Split PDF

Pull individual pages or page ranges out of a multi-page PDF. Drag the slider; export the slice. Useful for separating a tax return into per-form PDFs.

  3. 03 · Compress PDF

    Compress PDF

Shrink a PDF's file size by recompressing embedded images. Typical 30-60% reduction on image-heavy PDFs without visible quality loss.

  4. 04 · PDF Editor

    PDF Editor

Edit text, add shapes, fill forms, sign — all client-side. Slower than Acrobat for big PDFs but free and private.

  5. 05 · PDF to Text

    PDF to Text

Extract every word from a PDF as plain text. Works on text-PDFs immediately; for scans, see PDF OCR.

  6. 06 · PDF OCR to Text

    PDF OCR to Text

Run OCR on a scanned PDF (Tesseract.js) to recover text. Multi-minute on long documents but completely local — no cloud upload.

  7. 07 · PDF to JPG

    PDF to JPG

Convert each PDF page to a JPG. Useful for quick previews, social posts, or sending a single page as an image.

  8. 08 · Redact PDF

    Redact PDF

Black out sensitive text or regions before sharing — unlike a sharpie on a printout, redactions are permanent and not searchable underneath.

  9. 09 · PDF Watermark

    PDF Watermark

Add a text watermark (DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, your name) across every page. Configurable opacity, rotation, position.

  10. 10 · PDF Page Numbers

    PDF Page Numbers

Add page numbers to a PDF that's missing them. Format options for chapter prefixes, total page count, font size.

  11. 11 · PDF Organizer

    PDF Organizer

Reorder, rotate, or delete pages from a PDF visually. The 'I scanned the pages out of order' fix.

  12. 12 · Extract Images from PDF

    Extract Images from PDF

Pull every embedded image out of a PDF as separate files. Saves a step when designing reports or scraping figures from a paper.

Why local-only is faster than 'free online PDF' tools

The big web PDF services upload your file, queue it, process server-side, and stream the result back. For a 10 MB file on a typical home connection that's a 30-90 second wait. PDF.js and pdf-lib run the same logic in your browser in 2-10 seconds. The catch is that 100+ MB PDFs can exhaust browser memory — there a server-side service is genuinely faster. For everything under ~50 MB (which is 95% of real PDFs) local wins.

When you DO need a paid service

Three cases. (1) Heavy OCR on scanned multi-hundred-page documents — Adobe Acrobat or LlamaParse will be cleaner than Tesseract. (2) Form filling with complex calculated fields — Acrobat Pro still wins on edge cases. (3) Workflow automation (received-PDF → split → email) — that's a Zapier / Make / Pipedream job, not a browser tool job. For everything else, local PDF tools are the answer.
